Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Rehabilitation Company (HIOW CRC) is running the Creating Change programme in Hampshire and specifically at its Eastern hub Women’s Centre.

Creating Change is a ground-breaking programme for women on probation, which has been developed by HCT in conjunction with partners BearFace Theatre and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Rehabilitation Company (HIOW CRC). BearFace Theatre have multi-disciplined practitioners who are flexible and experienced in running bespoke courses for a wide variety of individuals and groups.

Creating Change is interactive using drama and theatre techniques to help service users to understand, identify, moderate and manage their attitudes, thinking and behaviours to make positive changes in their own lives.

As well as drama, other creative arts such as music and writing, depending on the interests and needs of the individuals and groups, are used as part of the programme.

Interchange Manager Jacqui Markie said: “The programme has already run in Basingstoke and Aldershot with very positive feedback from our service users. Both groups created a poem and a short film”. The programme will move to Southampton later in Autumn and to the Isle of Wight in January.

Activities were designed to be fun, reflective and motivational. Participants have said,

“This programme has been really eye-opening – dealing with my own issues and struggles. It has made me feel more confident and how to work as a team. It had made me think about myself as a person and is making me feel very positive.”

“The programme is different from what I expected, more interactive and no lecturing. I’ve been surprised of how supportive everyone is of each other. It has me more open minded.”

“Being in a group of women, chatting, sharing and laughing has been amazing, it’s not something I usually do. The compassion of the group has been amazing.”

Charlotte Slinger, Hampshire Cultural Trust cultural engagement manager, said: “We have been delighted to develop innovative and responsive arts-led programmes with HIOW CRC, we believe arts and culture can help to develop confidence, opinion, team work and many more life skills. The Creating Change programme is a key part of our Better Life Chances strategy, using culture to change lives in Hampshire.”

The first phase of the initiative was funded through the Purple Futures Innovation fund and has been enabled to continue through a £15,000 grant from the Hampshire OPCC Safer Communities Fund and £5,000 from Hampshire and IOW CRC.
